Amazon Kindle Fire HD 10 Long-term Review

Amazon is the king of affordable tablets. The Kindle Fire tablets are great for younger kids, high schoolers, and adults, with various sizes and accessories available for each model. I have been using the 10 inch model with the keyboard case, and I’ve been loving it. The keyboard case makes the tablet feel almost like a Chromebook or one of the old netbooks that were popular about a decade ago. The ability to type things with a real keyboard is much nicer than using the touch screen keyboard. To think that this inexpensive setup is very usable and enjoyable is one of the best things I’ve realized during this review.

When it comes to enjoying movies, videos, and music, The Kindle Fire HD 10 is FANTASTIC! The Full HD (1080p) display is plenty bright and vibrant enough to enjoy everything from YouTube videos, to Netflix, to (of course) Prime Video, you will not be disappointed with the quality of the video. When it comes to audio, the speakers are ok. There are two speakers, they sound good enough if you’re sitting somewhere decently quiet, or riding in a car, sitting in bed, and things like that. The good thing is that you can use Bluetooth headphones or earbuds and take advantage of the Bluetooth 5 connectivity. However, the Fire HD 10 also has a headphone jack, so you can use a pair of trusty wired headphones instead if you don’t want to deal with Bluetooth.

While the Fire HD 10 isn’t made for gaming, it handles basic puzzle and word games very well. My personal favorite game to play has been Wordscapes, this big display makes the game easier and more enjoyable. I have played PUBG mobile on here, and if you turn the graphics settings down a bit, you can actually have a good experience if you have a good internet connection. The SOC that powers the Kindle Fire tablets, including the HD 10, are designed for battery efficiency over performance, which is why the the battery is able to last as long as it does.

Battery life is nothing short of amazing on the Kindle Fire HD 10. The thing to remember is everyone uses their devices a little differently. My usage involves using WordPress app, browsing the web on either Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome, checking email with the Microsoft Outlook app, solving some crossword puzzles on Wordscapes, scrolling through Twitter and Reddit, and reading books/magazines in the Kindle app. As you can tell by the picture below, this is a device that can be used over the course of a few days, depending on your use, and the current models actually charge fast enough to at least be convenient.

A definite battery champ!

All in all, if you’re looking for an affordable tablet, look no further. The Kindle Fire HD 10 is a great tablet for entertainment, and with the keyboard case, you can get some work done as well. Between the battery life, expandable storage via micro sd card, affordability, good display, color options, and the keyboard case, there isn’t anything to hate about this tablet. Yes, it’s less powerful than a Samsung Galaxy Tab S or an iPad Air/Pro, but it has better battery life and when it comes to cost, you can save a significant amount of money and get something that will do what you need it to do. This is a great Chromebook alternative and can cost less than some two-in-one Chromebooks even after adding in the cost of the keyboard case. If the 10 inch tablet is too big, try the Kindle Fire HD 8+ with its charging dock and add a wireless keyboard and mouse for a similar experience on a smaller tablet.
